Why You Need Newborn Photos

As a photographer, I obviously value photos and capturing memories, but I believe that capturing the newborn phase is one of the most important times in a life. Let's dive deeper into why I believe that.

No matter if you decide to use a complimentary photography service provided by your hospital or hire a high-end photographer, these sessions are so important.

Des Moines family photographer - Father is seated on a couch holding his newbo.rn son, surrounded by three older sons. First child is school-aged and smiling at the camera, second child is a toddler and is not looking at the camera but is picking his nose, the third child is also school-aged and is staring at the camera.

  1. You only have a newborn for one month

  2. Babies change so much in the first few weeks of life

  3. This is the opportunity to have your first family photo

  4. Your children are going to want to know that they looked like

  5. These are heirloom photos--your grandchildren will look at these photos

A lifestyle newborn session is what this family did after their second baby, Braxton was born. I went into their home, where they were most comfortable and told their story through images. I captured a few photos in Braxton's nursery as well as in parent's bedroom for family cuddles. I was able to capture the little details of Brax including his toes as well as the bond between him and big sis.

Don't worry if you feel like your home isn't magazine worthy. Even the most lived-in homes with children can make beautiful photos. I wrote an entire blog post about why I love in-home sessions.

But perhaps you'd prefer a posed or stylized newborn session for your new babe. That's ok too! I will be offering in-studio newborn sessions in February 2023.

These sessions are for baby only and can take upwards of three hours. Afterall, we are on baby's time and sometimes he may need to eat or be rocked. That is OK, just come to the session prepared. Because of the potential for a long day, I recommend leaving one parent at home with the older children. That's a great opportunity for the big kiddo to get some one-on-one time with a parent though.

So, what's your style? Are you more posed newborn session, lifestyle session, or both!?
