The One From College

I had the best time in college. Nah, I wasn't a partyer, I'm still not. But I met some wonderful friends. I'm also a giant nerd and I loved my classes and I enjoyed studying. (Yes, I am a Ravenclaw). Monica was one of the individuals I met in college. We lived on different halls in the same dorm. So we've known each other for....a lot of years.

Covid has made seeing friends really, really difficult. She loves the outdoors and small groups of friends catching up. She hosts a women outdoorsy event every summer and we didn't get to participate this year (or last year) due to the pandemic. So of course I was absolutely thrilled when she asked me if I would take updated photos of her, her kiddos, and new beau, Josh. This was my first time meeting Josh and I texted Monica immediately afterwards saying how much I enjoyed him.

The four of them played in the leaves, twirled ribbons, wore the most gorgeous crowns, enjoyed a candy snack, and even caught frogs and toads. It was an absolutely beautiful evening. I love watching Monica parent her kiddos. She approaches every situation with calm energy, grace, and empathy. Nine year, E, was having a really tough time and did not want to be involved in the photos. With gentle parenting and lots of reassurance that I wasn't going to break his trust and take a picture of him without his consent, he did agree to stay close to his family and play nearby while the others got their photographs taken. Monica recognized that E was in a season of his life where he has control over his body. She could have forced him into the frame but that would have disrupted their bond (and made for a pretty lousy photo).

Throughout the course of our hour long session, I was able to engage in conversation with E and he did allow me to take some photos of him. This is a gigantic win for Monica and E. Patience and meeting kiddos where they are emotionally is so hugely important. I got some great captures of E in his most comfortable environment and he was 100% in control.

I was trying to figure out Monica's parenting style and who she most resembles. Mary Poppins and Atticus Finch came to mind but neither is completely accurate. All I know is that she is an amazing mother and friend. Catching up with her was good for my soul.
