Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

When I was growing up I learned an old nursey rhyme that goes something like this:

What Are Little Girls Made of?

Nursery Rhyme

What are little boys made of? What are little boys made of? Frogs and snails, And puppy-dogs' tails; That's what little boys are made of. What are little girls made of? What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, And all that's nice; That's what little girls are made of.

But now that I am grown, I don't think that all little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Take Brynley. Brynley is definitely sweet. But she also has a bit of sassy and some duck lips thrown into the mix. She is the perfect blend of sweet and sassy.

She celebrated her fifth birthday by doing a gliter session in my studio. We had an absolute blast together. Mom started a tradition when Bryn was just four days old, that each year around her birthday she takes a photo in Mom's wedding gown. So we started the session off that way before we started tossing glitter.

Bryn loved blowing kisses at the camera. She has the biggest, bluest eyes, just like her little brother. Last year when she tried on the wedding gown for photos, she did not enjoy it! This year she was cooperative and very sweet. She listened to the different ideas for posing and really enjoyed showing off her big personality in front of the camera. I can tell how much she matured in a year.

I love Bryn's blonde hair and blue eyes. She is a true beauty. When her mom and I were discussing the session and posing ideas, she mentioned that the one shot she really wanted was a glitter blowing image where you can see Bryn's eyes. Done and done. I also had to grab a shot of her glittery feet and toes. We used rose gold confetti for the session--based on the recommendation from another photographer. Thanks Synthia! I also had a matching rose gold banner that I cut apart. I considered hanging the banner, but ultimately I chose to use it as a play item rather than a decoration. The larger size was too big to throw but did create some diversity in the images. It was very easy to clean up also!

I will forever love the images with little girls putting their hands on their hips. I hope more girls are told that they are leaders rather than they are bossy when they stand assertively. I had so much fun with Bryn and this glitter session and I'm considering offering mini sessions in 2023. What do you think?

Towards the end of the session, Bryn stole her dad's hat and tried to pull him into the frame. He adamantly refused and made it very clear that he was anti-glitter. That made Mom and I laugh. But it didn't stop Bryn from hamming it up for the camera one last time. I can't wait to hear what Mom has planned next year for this sweet and sassy girl's birthday session.
