A Decade Down and a Lifetime to Go - 10 Year Anniversary Photo Shoot

An anniversary is a time to celebrate the joys of today, the memories of yesterday, and the hopes of tomorrow. — Unknown

Ten years--an entire decade being married is a long time and is reason to celebrate! Maridith contacted me and requested a very specific look for her anniversary photos. She wanted harsh flash and shutter drag. This is a style of photography that I was not well-versed in, but I knew I was up for the challenge.

Maridith went on to state that her and Jeff would be celebrating at the gorgeous Surety Hotel in Downtown Des Moines. The hotel provided the most gorgeous backdrop for photos including a bar, pool table, comfy setting, and a gorgeous room.

Maridith, an avid gardener, arranged her bouquet from peonies and other flowers from her garden. The bouquet complimented her dress and high heels perfectly. The couple truly thought of everything to make their ten-year anniversary photos memorable,

Shutter drag is achieved by shooting at a higher aperture, and a very slow shutter speed, with the rear curtain opening. You snap the photo then move the camera to create light drags or paths the light move from. It's such a cool effect that's oftentimes used at wedding receptions, concerts, or raves.

If you've been around for very long, you know that I love color. I love bold color and intense skies, but I also believe that there is a timeless storytelling about a black and white image. Maridith and Jeff's images are about half color and half black and white. Some of my absolute favorites are the black and whites though--which really surprises me. Maridith and Jeff did practice the lift in front of the elevator doors as well as a few twirls ahead of time. When I asked Jeff if he enjoyed being photographed, he responded by saying, "I love my wife and this is what she wants and how she wants to spend our anniversary." and I love that answer. Sometimes when you're married, you don't always enjoy the same things that your spouse does--but you show up and you participate. Jeff didn't sulk. He didn't whine and ask when we'd be done. He enjoyed being in the moment with Maridith.

Have you considered anniversary photos? Or maybe just a couples shoot just because? Would you opt for a more traditional session or dress to the 9's like Maridith and Jeff and go with a completely different style than your wedding photos? Either way, I am here for it. I loved documenting this milestone for this couple.
